The photographs were taken by Carl Reuther, who, as an engineer for his father's company, made extensive business trips to southeast asian countries in the 1930s. The Mannheim company Bopp & Reuther (founded in 1872) maintained business relations in this region as a highly specialized manufacturer of valves and measuring devices for water supply. Carl Reuther used his travel activities to visit famous cultural sites and was able to pursue his passion for photography. His photographs, expecially the landscapes, testify to a trained eye and artistic talent beyond that of an amateur photographer.
