An E-Shino chawan. Mino area, Owari province. Early Edo period

Of round tapering shape with horizontal grooves to the body, on a wide low foot, covered by a thick white crackled glaze, displaying three dango on a skewer in iron-black. Wooden box, the lid inscribed E-Shino Mino ko-gama (E-Shino, old kiln in Mino) and signed Taku shiki and sealed Taku.
Height 8.4 cm; diameter 11.5 cm

Katō Takuo (1917-2005) was an important potter and researcher of production techniques of ancient ceramics, especially Persian luster ware and ceramics from the Mino area.
