An ivory okimono of a just-hatched chick. Late 19th century

Raising its head out of the cracked shell with the beak slightly agape, expecting food, the eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl with dark pupils, the feet, feathers, and plumage neatly carved. Signed Ryūsai on the underside.
