An impressively large ivory okimono-type netsuke of Eguchi no Kimi. Mid-19th century

The courtesan Eguchi no Kimi sits with a long scroll over her knees on a very large reclining elephant, her robes minutely incised with a large asa-no-ha pattern and flowery scrolls to the borders. The writing on the scroll is illegible. Signed Chikuyōsai Tomochika with kaō. Age cracks.
Height 4.9 cm; L 7.7 cm

The representation of Eguchi no Kimi is a travesty on Fugen Bosatsu and refers to Saigyō Hōshi who is said to have had a poetry exchange full of philosophical allusions with the courtesan.
