A reliquary pendant with the Crucifixion
Lombardy, second half 16th C.

Glass beneath convex clear quartz painted on reverse in eglomisé technique with opaque and lustrous pigments, etched gold leaf, shell gold and silver and tin leaf. Wear to the gilding, minor losses to the pigment of the eglomisé in the lower border. In the original gilded cast silver capsule frame, H 6.5, W 5.0 cm.

Remains of the parchment in which the relic was wrapped are visible inside the pierced and chased vermeil capsule with convex quartz covers. The eglomisé plaque set into the front is fluidly painted with finely rendered features. It follows the usual composition for this depiction with Christ on the Cross in the centre flanked on either side by the figures of Mary and St. John within a gold border. The engraving of the Mater dolorosa inlaid on the reverse is of a later date. A Lombard pendant with a comparable depiction of the Crucifixion in eglomisé technique was offered by the art dealership Philippe d'Arschot at the BRAFA art fair in Brussels in 2017.
