Esther before Ahasver
Attributed to Johann Peter Abesch, Sursee, first quarter 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments. Stained softwood frame, H 33, W 40 cm.

The composition of this finely painted work is based on a painting by Charles Antoine Coypel (1694 - 1752) that hung in the royal bedchamber and was reproduced in an engraving by the "Graveur du Roi" Jean Audran (1667 - 1765) for the royal architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646 - 1708).
Both Johann Peter (1666 - 1731) and his daughter Anna Barbara Abesch (1706 - 1773) created several versions of this composition by Coypel, using varying colour palettes and compositional details.
In 1710, Johann Peter Abesch received a commission from the town of Sursee to paint four large works in oils after French prints for the local town hall. These works also included a version of Esther before Ahasver, which he completed in 1722. The present work may have been carried out in connection with that commission.
