Angler by a river
Augsburg, around 1770.

Glass panel painted on reverse in transparent pigments. With some minor localised retouches. Ebonised and gilded softwood frame, H 43, W 53.3 cm.

The painter of this piece reproduced a painting by Claude Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789) entitled "La jeune Napolitaine à la pêche". He based his work on an engraving by Jean Jacques Le Veau (1729 - 1786), that was published in Paris in around 1767 by Jacques Aliamet (1726 - 1788). The engraving reproduces the motif in reverse to the painting and the reverse glass work.
This lot includes a coloured example of the original print, framed under glass.
