Southern Italy / Naples, late 18th C.

Glass panel painted on reverse in opaque and transparent pigments against brown paper ground. With localised retouches. Octagonal painted and gilded softwood frame, H 47, W 58 cm.

This reverse glass painting reproduces a sheet by the French engraver François de Poilly the Elder (1623 - 1693) after Jacques Stella (1596 - 1657) in a mirror image. The fluid brushstrokes point towards an origin in Southern Italy, possibly Naples, where these kinds of octagonal frames were also used.
