St. Joseph

This painting reproduces in reverse the central motif from the sheet "Der Ehegatte der Engelskönigin - Sponsus Reginae Angelorum" (Bridegroom of the Queen of Angels) by the Augsburg engraver Philipp Andreas Kilian (1714 - 1759) after a painting by Johann Georg Bergmüller (1688 - 1762) from 1738.
Joseph Haller (1737 – 1773) is considered one of the most important representatives of the Passeirer school. He moved to Augsburg in 1761 at the latest and was presumably taught under Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner (1702 - 1761) as both a fresco and reverse glass painter. He apprenticed with Franz Sigrist (1727 - 1803) and returned to South Tyrol in 1764. The reverse glass painting presented here is one of only three known examples. In 2020 it was featured in the exhibition "Zwischen Augsburg und Venedig. Die Passeirer Malerschule" (Between Augsburg and Venice. The Passeirer School) in Tyrol Castle as an example for the exchange of artistic ideas between Augsburg and Veneto at the time.
