A French 18k gold and sapphire artist pendant "Monsieur Abeille"

Abstract pendant in gold wire stylizing a face with openwork decoration recalling the stripes of a bee, the eyes set with two small sapphires. Hallmarks: Paris gold guarantee ‘tête d'aigle’, artist's mark ‘Jean Cocteau’ (facsimile signature), maker's mark, serial no. 1496/2932, Expl. 18/50. H 14 cm, weight 27.81 g. Original wooden box with velvet lining (22.7 x 16.3 x 3.2 cm). Chain L 39 cm, weight 6.57 g.

Created by the goldsmiths Francois Hugo and Pierre Hugo after an original drawing by Jean Cocteau in an edition of 50 numbered copies.

Provenance

German private collection. Offered in Lempertz auction 867 on December 4, 2004, lot 867. The original certificate by Pierre Hugo from 1992 mentioned in the catalogue has been lost.
