Signed and dated 1633, the present dune landscape displays the typical features of Jan van Goyen's compositions. The landscape character of Holland is reflected in the diagonal scheme with a low horizon, undulating dunes and a cloudy sky. The horizontal areas of light and dark alternate and are enlivened by groups of figures in both the darker foreground and the lighter middle ground. Yellow-green to lush deep green tones harmonise with bright warm brown earth tones and characterise the colour palette of this depiction. It is a successful example of van Goyen's style of tonal landscape painting, which achieved atmospheric impressions with a reduced colour palette and was highly praised for centuries.

In a Belgian private collection for three generations.
