Probably Swabia second half 15th century

A carved wood figure of St George, presumably Swabia, second half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round and partially freestanding. The reverse flattened, the back hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy and gilding. Depicting the slender saint standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. He is dressed in armour and wears a long cloak that encompasses the figure draped from his shoulders. The saint presumably originally held a lance in his right hand. His other attribute, a dragon held on a leash that may have originally been a separately carved piece, is lacking. The figure stands on a later, associated plinth designed as an earth mound.
A vertical crack to the torso. Wear with losses to the polychromy. Height 99 cm (with plinth).

Provenance

South German private collection.
