Swabia 2nd half 15th century

A Swabian limewood figure of the Virgin on the Crescent, second half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. The older polychromy extensively overpainted, especially in the skin areas. Depiction of the Virgin Mary standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. She places Her extended right foot on the crescent moon and holds the nude Christ Child in Her right arm as He reaches for the pear held in Her left hand. The overall composition of the piece as well as the facial features and tall crown worn by the Virgin reveal this to be a characteristic example of late Gothic art from Swabia.
One of the blossoms on the back of the Virgin's crown missing. A vertical crack to the front with an older stabilising splint above the hem of the gown. Wear throughout. Height 139 cm.
