A Lower Rhenish carved poplar Pietà group, around 1480

Carved in the round, the back of the throne flattened. Minimal remains of former polychromy. Depicting the Virgin seated on a throne-like bench holding the body of Her dead Son in Her lap, designed for a frontal viewpoint. This devotional image can be brought into connection with a group of similar objects created in a workshop in the Lower Rhine region in the late 15th century.
Vertical cracks to the front. Christ's left hand, right forearm and tip of His right foot lacking. Wear throughout. Mounted on a newer wooden plinth. Height 47 cm (without plinth).
