The painter Paul von Franken made a name for himself with landscapes from the Caucasus, even outside Germany. Together with his Latvian-born wife, he settled in Tbilisi in 1853 and travelled from there on behalf of the Russian government, primarily to the battlefields in the Caucasus. The landscapes and people of this region became his favourite motif - even after his return to Germany in 1860, as the present painting from 1875 shows.
