Perseus and Andromeda

Oil on copper. 45 x 37 cm.

The liberation of Andromeda by Perseus was a popular motif in Rome in the early 17th century, and was particularly popularized by Giuseppe Cesari, called Cavalier d'Arpino. Another version of this composition with identical dimensions, but painted on onyx, is housed in a private collection in Milan and listed in the database of the Fondazione Federico Zeri (no. 55588).
