The so-called Villa of Maecenas in Tivoli, located below the Villa d'Este, is an ancient Hercules sanctuary from the 2nd century BC. The ruins consist of a large underground vault, whose archways, overgrown with vegetation, Hackert draws here in great detail and presents to the viewer in a beautiful play of light and shadow.
