Verso inscribed: Lessing

The watercolour offers a view onto a mountainous landscape with a medieval monastery complex. A path leads down from it, which a priest and his acolyte have taken, probably on a so-called Versehgang. This composition, traditionally attributed to Lessing, reproduces a painting by Carl Friedrich Lessing that appeared at a Viennese auction a few years ago (Dorotheum, 12 April 2011, lot 37). It could be a preliminary study for this painting, dated 1834, or a kind of ‘ricordo’ of the same and probably by the hand of the master himself.
