Max Klinger

The Ruins of San Tommaso

Watercolour. 17.2 x 23.3 cm.
Signed lower left: Max Klinger / La chiesa di S. Tommaso.

Verso old, no longer legible label.

Recent photos of the ruins of San Tommaso show them in a state that looks more or less as they did when Max Klinger drew them. The site is located on the top of a small hill in Santa Maria del Campo, directly on the Genoa-Livorno motorway. Little remains of this ancient and historic sacred building, the so-called ‘Cenobio di San Tommaso’: a few square stone walls, a column with a base and capital on which the arches supporting the roof rest, and a few elongated windows facing the valley.
