In this work from the 1970s, one recognises Penck's typically schematic figures, which at first glance appear as primitive pictograms or childish scribbles, but on closer inspection contain complex symbolic and social statements. “In contrast to illusionist painting and the thoroughly-composed space, he directs the eye to the structure of surfaces. A seemingly existential, timelessly archaic formal language combines in his paintings with an attitude to life that is perceived as urban and post-industrial [...]” (Dirk Luckow, Vorwort, in: exhib.cat.
