Zwischen Tag und Traum
1992

Acrylic on canvas. 180 x 150 cm. Framed in studio frame. Signed and dated 'mack 92' verso on canvas. Titled '"Zwischen Tag und Traum"' on stretcher. - Minor traces of age.

Mack titled the series of works created from 1991 onwards „Chromatische Konstellationen“ [chromatic constellations], which is dedicated exclusively to the unity of colour and light in a diverse and experimental manner with regards to the application of paint. Through nuanced gradations, but also through clear-cut contrasts, dynamic sequences of the highest intensity are created.
“My interest lies in non-representational painting, which isn’t hostile to nature, which doesn’t follow a programme or system, but in which structures of order show pictorial tectonics, a form of painting in which constructive elements dominate over organic forms, crystalline structures and refractions of light become visible; a form of painting in which each picture has its individual style, but which at the same time objectifies itself to the extent that it can lay claim to universality.” (Heinz Mack, Gedanken zur Malerei, in: Mack, Malerei 1991-2001, Mönchengladbach 2001, p.14)
The large-format painting “Zwischen Tag und Traum” [between night and dream] places basic square shapes positioned up-ended and on top of one another in nuanced shades of blue. The manifold, structured layers create a crystalline-looking vertical colour structure, which is spotlighted by isolated tones of turquoise, yellow, and orange in the upper centre of the painting. The result is an overwhelming overall effect of purest, light-penetrating colour.
