Sean Scully

Untitled (7.18.85)
1985

Watercolour, pastel and chalk on card. 56 x 76.5 cm. Framed under glass. Signed and dated 'Scully 7.18.85'

The present work from 1985 is characterised by the juxtaposition of clearly defined geometric forms and a lively, almost impasto application of paint. This combination lends the work a special significance and conveys a combination of physicality and abstraction that is typical of Scully's work. Unlike many representatives of geometric abstraction, his painting always evokes a certain warmth and humanity. In the present work, Sean Scully uses interlocking rectangles and stripes, executed in earthy colours and black and white tones. The alternation between horizontal and vertical elements and the different textures of the coloured areas lend the picture a tactile quality. The rough, almost sketchy lines underline Scully's painting style, which exude a feeling of power and spontaneity. At first glance, his works appear strict and formal, but on closer inspection they reveal an astonishing complexity and sensuality.
