In 1987, Fetting created a series of large-scale forest paintings, which have a spooky, surreal character due to the powerful coloured light. All of Fetting’s paintings are an expression of a certain colour constellation. In this painting, it appears at the same time heavily overcast and glowing intensely. ‘The forest paintings are from Germany when I was at the Grunewald. [...] It has to do with Germany, with German history, with the “German forest” from fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, which I read a lot as a child. [...] For me, it was always a counterbalance to these cityscapes. If you’ve seen too much of the city, then your soul simply needs nature too, it needs to recharge its batteries.’ (Rainer Fetting, Ich lasse mich emotional packen von dem was ich in der Realität vorfinde, Rainer Fetting im Gespräch mit Achim Sommer, in: Rainer Fetting, Landschaften, Bonn, 2001, p.17).
