A small Aka-Raku chawan. Kyoto. Early 19th century

Of cylindrical shape, with a somewhat irregular body and undulating rim, on a small foot ring with a spiral inside. Completely covered with a crackled salmon-coloured glaze, with two grey spots on the outside. Stamped Raku in a double circle. Silk bag.
Height 6.6 cm; diameter 9 cm

The Raku pottery seal on this chawan is the retirement seal of Ryōnyū (1756-1834), the second son of Chōnyū, who became the 9th head of the Raku family after the resignation due to illness of his ill elder brother Tokunyū in 1770 at the age of only 14. He used the seal after his own official resignation in 1811 until his death.
