A large Kuro-Raku chawan. Kyoto. Second half 19th century

With a somewhat irregular body and wavy rim, on a strong foot ring, a spiral inside. Completely covered with a slightly porous black glaze, with two rust-brown oval spots to the outside. Stamped in a double circle: Raku. Silk bag. Tomobako, inscribed on the lid: Kuro raku wan and Raku Keinyū with round seal: Raku. Inscribed on the reverse of the lid: Keinyū saku kuro chawan and signed Jūnidai Kōnyū … and round Raku seal (certification by Kōnyū XII that this chawan was made by Keinyū).
Height 8.5 cm; diameter 12 cm

The seal Raku on this chawan is one of the official seals of Keinyū (1817-1902), the adopted son and son-in-law of Tannyū (1795-1854), whom he succeeded as the 11th head of the Raku family after his resignation in 1845. Raku Kōnyū (1857-1932) was the eldest son of Keinyū (1817-1902) and his successor.
