A Aka-Raku chawan. Kyoto. Late 19th century

Of globular shape, on a small foot ring with spiral inside. To the outside three deeply incised pairs of pine needles. Completely covered with a crackled beige-coloured glaze, outside with salmon red stripes and streaks, inside completely glazed salmon colour. Stamped in a double circle: Raku. Silk bag. Original red-brown lacquered wooden box, inscribed on the lid in white lacquer: Raku chawan aka Kōnyū saku.
Height 7.6 cm; diameter 11.4 cm

The Raku seal on this chawan is the first official seal of Kōnyū (1857-1932) eldest son of Keinyū (1817-1902) and after his resignation in 1871 the 12th head of the Raku family.
