The model for this small image is the famous sandstone stele of the preaching Buddha carved in the Gupta empire ca. 475. The stele was discovered in 1904/05 during excavations by F. O. Oertel in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, in Northern India and exhibited in the Archaeological Museum there from 1910 onward. The so-called Sarnath Buddha is considered one of the most important representations of the Buddha in Asian art. For this reason, replicas and copies have been made again and again in various materials.
