A wood gigaku mask netsuke. Late 19/early 20th century

With highly expressive facial features with raised brows, large nose and mouth revealing both rows of teeth, with large cap crowned by a feline animal. Remains of pigments. Signed Tessai tō with kaō.
Height 4.2 cm

Kano Tessai (1845-1925) became famous for his one-to-one copies of old gigaku masks in the Shōsōin in Nara. He drew inspiration from these masks for smaller formats such as netsuke.
