Michael Neher

City Wall in Kehlheim an der Donau

Oil on panel. 39 x 32.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Mich. Neher 1844.

Kehlheim in Lower Bavaria is located at the mouth of the Danube gorge, below the Michaelberg and where the Altmühl flows into the Danube. It was a favourite excursion destination for the people of Munich in the 19th century.

Interest in the area increased with the construction of the so-called Liberation Hall on Michelsberg, which was built between 1842 and 1863 on behalf of King Ludwig of Bavaria according to plans by Friedrich Gärtner and Leo von Klenze. It is certainly no coincidence that Neher painted this view of Kehlheim in the first years of the construction of this commemorative monument to the battles against Napoleon, as the town was a widespread topic of discussion at the time
