Francesco Furini

Penitent Magdalene

Oil on canvas (relined). 154.2 x 126.3 cm.

Mary Magdalene was a much-loved subject during the Baroque age, as it offered the narrative opportunity to represent an elegant and sensual nude, disguised as a devotional work.
Furini approached the theme several times (e.g Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Gemäldegalerie, inv. no. 193; Pinacoteca di Siena, Collezione Pucci, Florence) and the success of the composition is also testified by the number of contemporary copies and multiples derived from the originals. The present painting, unpublished, is an interesting addition to Furini's oeuvre.
We would like to thank Professor Dr Sandro Bellesi for endorsing the full attribution on the basis of a digital photograph.

Provenance
