Oswald Achenbach

View of Rome from the Villa Medici

Oil on canvas (relined). 46 x 73 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Osw. Achenbach 1893.

The Eternal City shimmers here in the most beautiful twilight. The sound of splashing water from the famous cannonball fountain (Fontana della palla di cannone), created in 1589 by Annibale Lippi for Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici and placed theatrically in front of the villa of the same name on the Pincio, is almost audible. In this painting, Oswald Achenbach takes up one of the most famous motifs of the vedutists and early amateur photographers of the late 19th century. His finely glazed application of paint harmonises the scene in the fore- and middle ground, which is animated by walkers, with the romantic city view on the horizon.
