Sergei Iwanowitsch Swetoslavski

Pilgrims at Sviatohirsk

Oil on canvas. 78 x 135 cm.
Signed lower right in cyrillic letters.

Sergei Ivanovich Svetoslavsky's impressive painting shows a wide-ranging panorama along the River Donets in south-east Ukraine. The river winds calmly into the distance, where it flows into the Don. In the foreground, pilgrims are lined up on rocky heights in the atmospheric evening light. Their destination, as the title of the painting suggests, is the famous Svyatogorsky Monastery, which is not yet visible in the composition.
Born in Kiev, the painter studied at the Moscow Art Academy from 1874. He later lived mainly in Kiev and travelled to the Caucasus, Ukraine and Crimea, where he found the motifs for his highly sought-after paintings.

Provenance
