A brown saddled horse and a white horse in a stable, with a bucket, cloth or horse blanket in the background - these are all the building blocks of Emil Volkers' horse paintings. The artist spent his youth at the Birkenfeld post station, where he constantly had horses in mind as models for his drawings. He was a painter and lithographer, a student at the Dresden Academy of Art (under Rietschel and Schnorr von Carolsfeld as well as the renowned horse painters Albrecht Adams and Franzs Adams in Munich (1852/57). He worked as an artist in Düsseldorf, painting portraits of riders and horses, as well as military depictions. The horse pictures were reproduced in lithographic series, including the illustrations of horses from the Royal Stud Farm in Celle, 1857 (22 sheets) and the illustrations of stallions from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg (6 sheets).
