Wladimir Jegorowitsch Makowskij

Portrait of an elderly Beggar

Oil on canvas. 49 x 38.5 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: D. Makowsky 1868.

In this hitherto unknown early work, Makovsky has created a portrait of an elderly beggar to whom, according to E. Nesterova, he has given the features of his father. Makovsky paints his model with a subtly contemplative realism, without creating a sentimental genre picture. This early work was created in 1868. Shortly afterwards, Makovsky joined the ‘Peredvizhniki’ (Russian for ‘wanderers’), founded in 1870, one of the most important secessionist groups in 19th century Russia.
We would like to thank Prof. Elena Nesterova, St. Petersburg, for confirming the authenticity of the painting (written communication dated 4.3.2025). The canvas is missing the stretcher frame. It is mounted on cardboard and loose in the frame.
