Josef Scharl

Bildnis Dr. H. Naumann
Circa 1928

Oil on canvas, glued to card by the artist and nailed onto stretcher. 80 x 62.5/65 cm. Framed. On a label verso signed and inscribed by Josef Scharl 'München - Neue Sezession Josef Scharl München 20. - Maillingerstr. 15/IV "Bildnis Dr. H. Naumann" (Öl) Privatbesitz - Unverkäuflich Jos. Scharl'. - Varnish probably somewhat yellowed, otherwise in good condition.

A detailed study of Dr. Hans Heinrich Naumann's hands dated ‘1928’ also allows the completed half-length portrait to be dated to this year. Among other things, the sitter had written about a newly discovered self-portrait by the German Renaissance painter Matthias Grünewald in 1930. He was also a member of the Bavarian state parliament.
