Framed under glass.
Monogrammed and dated lower right: G.W. / Napoli 1841;
inscribed lower left: Götzloff Maler aus Dresden.

Carl Wilhelm Götzloff, who had been a student at the Dresden Academy from 1814 to 1821 and had studied under Caspar David Friedrich and Johann Christian Dahl, among others, subsequently spent most of his life in Italy, where he also died in 1866 in Sorrento.
Waldmüller's portrait of the artist was drawn in 1841 in Naples, where Götzloff had been working since 1835 as court painter to Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies.
