Franz Skarbina opposed the traditional conventions of the art world of his time and, influenced by the French Impressionists, sought new forms of expression.
Together with Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow, he was one of the founders of the Group of Eleven in Berlin, which, alongside the Munich Secession, was the most important artists' association in Germany to emancipate itself from the existing art scene.
