With remnants of an old label on the reverse on the stretcher: "Nr. 11[…] / München".
The young Andreas Achenbach embarked on his longest study trip to Rome and southern Italy from 1843 to 1845. After his return, he used the sketches he had made there to create landscape paintings such as this expansive view, which extends from a small body of water in the foreground across a richly forested landscape to a narrow strip of sea and a coastal mountain range towering in the distance. The hunter with his dog reappears in a very similar ‘Large Landscape with Cork Oaks’, which was painted three years later and was also recently auctioned at Lempertz (30 May 2020, lot 2526).
