Katsushika Hokusai

The Jewel River

20.3 x 38.3 cm. Part of a yokonagaban surimono. The Jewel River in Chōfu, one of the mu Tamagawa (Six Jewel Rivers). Women doing laundry. Unsigned. Rare. Good impression, embossing, colours still good, strongly trimmed, rubbed, soiled, creased, backed, mounted in mat at upper margin.

This surimono is only a part of a larger one. The original full image stretches further to the left, showing two more farm houses and the signature Katsushika Hokusai ga. The full image is housed in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (inventory no. 21.7877), as well as a cutout, that is very similar to the surimono presented here (inventory no. 11.17577). Both prints have been pulled off the same key block, but the flowers left of the house differ.
