AN EARLY 18TH CENTURY FLEMISH IVORY CORPUS CHRISTI

Ivory, hollow cross, corresponding plinth, Flemish, early 18th C.
One fingertip of the left hand lost, fine vertical cracks, slight yellowing. Includes a corresponding wooden cross and base. Height 68 cm, width of arms 40 cm.

An early 18th century Flemish ivory Corpus Christi. Carved in the round, the arms noticeably attached. The body heavily elongated, the head hanging down to the side, the arms pulled high and the feet laid on top of each other beneath one nail. Both the sculpturally modelled body and the perizonium, which is affixed with two cords and hangs to the side, are depicted in fine detail. Includes a corresponding INRI plaque.
