Fernando Botero

SAN BOROLAS
1967

Öl auf Leinwand. 94 x 96,5 cm. Unten rechts signiert

Fernando Botero äußerte 1971 zu seinem Werk: "My subject matter is sometimes satirical, but these "puffed-up" personalities are being "puffed" to give them sensuality. I am not interested in fat people as fat people. [...] I do not have a favourite subject. My desire is to create a painter's world like the real world - full of everything. It is very important to be able to paint everything and come out with something that is a part of your "world", because this means that you have a position, a style and not a "product", which is what most painters have. [...] In art, as long as you have ideas and think, you are bound to deform nature. Art is deformation. There are no works of art that are truly realistic." (Fernando Botero, in: Ein Blick zurück, Momentaufnahme 1971, Interview mit Wibke von Bonin, in: Dieter Brusberg (Hg.), Fernando Botero, Der umgekehrte Kolumbus, Eine Retrospektive, Ausst.Kat., Berlin 1996, S.6 f.)
