Andreas Achenbach

Beach at Scheveningen

Oil on canvas, mounted on panel. 21.5 x 29.5 cm.
Monogrammed lower left: AA (in ligature); inscribed in light lettering: Scheveningen d. 2 September 1835.

With an oval shaped estate stamp on the back of the panel “Andreas Achenbach / Nachlassausstellung / Städtische Kunsthalle / Düsseldorf”.

This precisely dated beach scene was painted during Andreas Achenbach's return from a trip to Sweden which he undertook with his father in 1835. It is therefore one of the earliest works by the artist, who was 19 years old at the time and had recently left the Düsseldorf Academy under protest. The young Achenbach used his monogram especially often for sketches and studies.
