Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne (ed.), August Sander. Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts, volume 1: Der Bauer, München 2002, ill. p. 209. (here titled and dated: Bauern aus der Leuscheid, 1926)
Size, mounting and inscription of the print indicate that Sander envisaged it for his cultural work "People of the 20th Century". The farmers from Leuscheid, here named "village philosophers", belonged to the portfolio "farmer types". In this portfolio Sander collected photographs showing farmers of diverse age, regional origin and social status.
