Günther Förg - Untitled
Acrylic on wood on beige painted wood. 40 x 30 cm (67 x 57 cm). Signed and dated 'Förg 03'. - Traces of studio and minor traces of age.
In his late work, Günther Förg liberates himself from the need to fall back on creative stimuli for his works. They are painting in its purest form, their purist beauty being derived from a masterfully developed composition and vitality of colour, described by Kay Hermer as follows: “No painter has ever gone as far as Förg with respect to drawing sense and pleasure from the emptiness of the pictorial act. With his new paintings, Förg has overcome the necessity to be inspired by real models, he is now completely himself in his painting. […] By purging his works of any content (which a knowing viewer could laboriously press back into these works if he were to take pleasure in it), Günther Förg provides every viewer with the opportunity to enjoy his art as truly free art.” (Kay Heymer, in: Günther Förg. Make it new, exhib.cat. Kunsthalle Recklingshausen 2004, p. 98)
We would like to thank Michael Neff from the Estate Günther Förg for kind confirmation of the work’s authenticity.
