Emil Nolde

Tulpen und Amaryllis

Watercolour on thin Japan paper 35 x 46.5 cm Framed under glass. Signed 'Nolde.' in pencil lower right. - In fine condition with fresh colors.

With the narrowly defined framing of the picture and the darkly oscillating background in tones of violet and blue, Emil Nolde dramatically stages what is, in itself, a modest grouping of splendidly colourful spring flowers. The grandly seen flowers - rounded tulips in a luminous yellow and conical, red and white-striped amaryllis - seem to want to burst out of the pictorial space, and they unfold their full radiance before the dark ground. As always in his floral watercolours, Nolde has committed himself entirely to the chromatic power and diversity of forms offered to him by nature; here, however, he has used compositional means to intensify them to achieve a dramatic and mesmerising overall effect.
