A Meissen porcelain snuff box with a portrait of Augustus the Strong

Porcelain and milk glass snuff box with a gilt metal relief and gold mountings. Of curving form and oval section, the white lid applied with a portrait of Augustus the Strong in an oval palmette wreath flanked by two chinoiserie figures. The outer faces with finely painted merchant navy and chinoiserie scenes in gilt quatrefoil reserves. The base with prunus flowers and tendrils in purple and iron red. Marked to the interior with blue crossed swords mark with pronounced pommels and K.P.M. The mountings with later Dutch gold import stamps. Minor wear to the décor. The mountings regilt on the interior. The lid retouched, the portrait slightly loose and with retouched gilding. H 4.9, W 6.6, D 4.1 cm.
1723 – 24; décor attributed to Johann Gregorius Hoeroldt, probably around 1725.
