Alongside maritime depictions, often with dramatic stormy seas, and views of Scandinavian mountain landscapes and waterfalls, scenes of flat landscapes, many of which from his home region, form the third largest group of works in Andreas Achenbach's oeuvre. By the time the present work was painted in the late 1840s, Achenbach was not only a celebrated and decorated artist in Europe, but also in America. His works were regularly exhibited there and could be found in many of the continent's most important collections.
