Portrait of Friedrich I, King in Prussia

Oil on canvas (relined). 158 x 112 cm.

Friedrich I (1657 Königsberg - 1713 Berlin) from the house of Hohenzollern was the first King of Prussia. He was known as Margrave Friedrich III of Brandenburg Elector of the Holy Roman Empire and Duke in Prussia from 1688 before taking the name Friedrich I when he became King in 1701. In this imposing half-length portrait, based on an unknown prototype, he wears a suit of armour, an ermine lined cloak, and the collar of his newly founded Order of the Black Eagle.

Provenance

In German aristocratic ownership for three generations.
