A reverse glass portrait of Friedrich II

Portrait in oils of the King in a Prussian Garde du Corps uniform with the Order of the Black Eagle and an ermine trimmed cloak. Not signed. Minor losses to the pigment in the background. H with frame 56.8, W 46.5 cm.
Attributed to Johann Matthäus Bauhof, Kaufbeuren, circa 1760.

Johann Matthäus Bauhof was active in the Protestant city of Kaufbeuren around 1760. Alongside Augsburg, Kaufbeuren was the most important centre for reverse glass painting at the time. Bauhof painted religious motifs as well as several portraits of Gustav Adolf and Friedrich II. The present work is presumably based on a motif by the Prussian court painter (1683 - 1757).
