Jan Brueghel the Younger

RURAL STREET WITH CHAPEL

Oil on copper. 26,5 x 36 cm.

This painting repeats a composition by Jan Brueghel the Elder in the Wellington Museum in London. It is a painting on copper, slightly smaller and dated by Ertz in the years 1606/07 (op.cit. No. 33). It shows a hilly landscape with peasants on their way to the market. The Small wayside chapel under the trees can also be found on a signed painting on copper in a private collection, and on another one that appeared in the London art market in 2008, only somewhat smaller in comparison to ours (op. cit. no. 31 and 32). Klaus Ertz dates our painting about 1620. Contrary to today´s notion of originality, Jan Brueghel the Younger frequently repeated his father's compositions until the late 1620s.
